Walter Stewart, Bachelor of Decreets, Canon of Glasgow, Dean of Moray, and Rector of Tanades, St Andrews diocese, was a natural son of Robert II and an unknown mistress,Paul, Sir James Balfour. The Scots Peerage. Edinburgh: D. Douglas (1904), vol. 1, p. 17.Dunbar, Sir Archibald H. Scottish Kings: A Revised Chronology of Scottish History 1005-1625. Edinburgh: D. Douglas (1899), p. 169. although the exact date of his birth is unknown.Douglas Richardson. Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families, 5 vols, ed, Kimball G. Everingham (Salt Lake City: the author 2013), vol. 1, pp. 644-645 BRUS 10.v. Walter Stewart. The Exchequer Rolls suggest his mother may have been the king's long time mistress, Marion Cardney, citing a charter of the Cardneys to John Stewart which includes a reversion to"his brother Walter", whom failing to the crown.Burnett, George. Rotuli Scaccarii Regum Scotorum (The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland). Edinburgh: H.M. General Register House (1880), vol. 4, appendix to preface, pp. clxix-clxx. This is sufficient to show that John and Walter were (at least) half-brothers, but does not conclusively establish that Walter's mother was Marion. The fact that there is no mention of this Walter Stewart in any charter before 1382/3 does suggest, however, that he was not born until after that date.
Walter Stewart was appointed Dean of Glasgow in 1418 by Pope Benedict XIII but the appointment was later contested and, in February 1421, he resigned his right to the position in favor of Thomas de Myrton. In 1428 he was elected Dean of Moray, a position which he still held on 26 February 1433. During 1432-1433 he served as Treasurer of Scotland.
Walter Stewart, Dean of Moray, died sometime before 9 January 1434.
