== Research Notes ==
Extensive and long-continued search has failed to identify with certainty any ancestor of Zaccheus Gould, earlier than Thomas, who died in 1520, and whose will is given below, together with the wills of his brothers John and William. These three also lived at Bovingdon, which is a small village of Hertfordshire, and still a chapelry in the parish of Hemel Hempstead, about 24 miles N.W. of London; and their descendants remained there, or in the immediate vicinity, long after many of their posterity had lived and died in New England. Branches of the family appear to have established themselves in Devonshire, Dorset and Somersetshire before the middle of the 17th century.
