=== Virginia Magazine of History & Biography ===
"The Kirby family was one of the founding families of Museville, Pittsylvania Co, VA. More than 100 years before the community, which is now Museville, became a post office, the land in the immediate vicinity had been settled by members of the Kirby family around 1746-48. John, Francis & William Kirby held separate grants totaling some 1000 acres near the junction of Snow Creek & Pigg River. The original inhabitants were Indians & legend has it that a Kirby girl was scalped at the footbridge over Snow Creek.
Museville was a post office from 1857 onward. Before the name "Museville" was used, the post office was called "Oak Shop" (1851-1857); this name may have originated from the prominent "Oakes family".
In about 1817, when Moses Kirby Sr. built what is now the oldest standing residence in the community, he is said to have removed portions of the original homestead dwelling to the present site on the banks of Snow Creek. Moses is buried in the Museville Christian Church Cemetery.
The house was the dower of Elizabeth Hudson Kirby when she married Joab Oakes Sr., thereby uniting these two founding families.
The house has been meticulously restored by Mr. Davis, who inherited the property from his father, Lee "Babe" Davis, who in turn, had bought it from a member of the Oakes family in 1905."
