Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk was the son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk and Hon. Margaret Audley.1 He was born on 24 August 1561. He married, firstly, Marie Dacre , daughter of Thomas Dacre, 4th Baron Dacre of Gillesland and Elizabeth Leyburne , before 9 May 1577. He married, secondly, Katherine Knyvett, daughter of Sir Henry Knyvett , circa 1583. He died on 20 May 1628 at age 66. He was created 1st Baron Howard de Walden in 1597.1 He gained the title of 1st Earl of Suffolk on 21 July 1603.

BIOGRAPHY: 1st earl of Suffolk. The son of the 4th duke of Norfolk, hewas attainted at the time of his father's execution, but his rightswere restored in 1584. He volunteered for naval duty against theSpanish Armada (1588), was knighted at sea, and rose quickly to highrank. Howard commanded the squadron that attacked the Spanish treasurefleet off the Azores (1591). Recalled from naval duty to enterParliament in 1597, he was made Baron Howard of Walden. In 1601 he wascommander of the forces that besieged the earl of Essex in his house,and was a member of the jury which tried him. Upon the accession ofJames I (1603), he was created earl of Suffolk and later held a numberof official posts. In 1614 he became lord high treasurer. Hisdaughter, Frances Howard, and her husband, Robert Carr, earl ofSomerset, were tried and convicted (1616) in the murder of Sir ThomasOverbury. Suffolk was accused (1618) of embezzlement and fraud astreasurer, tried (1619), convicted and heavily fined. Although he andhis wife, who was thought to have influenced him, were soon released,he did not regain influence.



He fought against the armada in 1588 and took part in the expedition to Cádiz in 1596, being created Baron Howard of Walden. Under James I he was lord chamberlain from 1603 to 1614 and lord high treasurer from 1614 to 1618. In 1619 he was fined £7,000 and imprisoned for ten days for embezzlement, but was subsequently restored to royal favour.
