Individual Details
William Cocke
(1520 - Nov 1582)
The date of birth for ''' William Cocke''' or who his parents were is not yet known. What is known is that he had at least three siblings - Thomas Cocke , Margery Cocke, and Humfrey Cocke
William married a woman named Elizabeth and they had six children. William died in November 1582 in Shropshire, England. One source says Pickthorn, another says Stottesdon, but, as those are neighboring villages in the Parish of Stottesdon, both are probably correct.
The Parish of Stottesdon lies in Shropshire (or Salops), England. In the late 1500's, during the Elizabethan era, the Parish of Stottesdon consisted of about sixteen small communities including Pickthorn, Walfurlong, the Heath, Walton, and Stottesdon. Most of these communities had between three and ten families. Stottesdon had about twenty families.
Pickthorn dates back to a bit before 1165. In 1582, Pickthorn belonged to John Purslow who leased the land to about four families. William Cocke and his brother, Thomas Cocke, headed two of these families. Other members of the Cocke family lived nearby in Walfurlong and the Heath.
William and Elizabeth Cocke had sons four sons and two daughters. All were unmarried in 1582 except one of the daughters. That daughter married Thomas Deuxhill.
William died in November 1582 died at Pickthorn. He left a will, dated 1582, in which he names three sons and one daughter. His son Richard is not included in the will, but Richard's daughter Ursula is named. An additional son, Robert, is sometimes attributed to this couple, but he is not mentioned in the will. This will is on file at the Hereford Record Office, England.
