Mathieu de Flandre was the son of Thierry de Lorraine and Gertrude de Flandre. In 1160, Mathieu became Comte de Boulogne, by right of his wife.

Mathieu married twice: :#Marie de Blois, Countess of Boulogne, daughter of Stephen, King of England & his wife Mathilde Ctss de Boulogne-sur-Mer.:#Eleonore de Vermandois, daughter of Raoul I “le Vaillant” Comte de Vermandois et de Valois & his second wife Aélis [Petronille] d'Aquitaine.

Mathieu and Marie had two children, both daughters:
:#Ida de Flandre, b.1160/61, d. 21 Apr 1216. She married four times.:#Matilde de Flandre, b1170, d. 16 Oct 1210 at Louvain, m. Henri de Brabant

Mathieu and Eleonore had one daughter, name unknown.
He fought for Louis VII, King of France, and was wounded by a crossbow shot at Driencourt, Normandy, on 25 Dec 1173, and did not recover. He is buried at the Abbaye de Saint-Josse.
