-- MERGED NOTE ------------

== Biography ==}John Scrymgeour was born about 1388, probaby in Dundee, eldest son of Sir James Scrymgeour of Dudhope and Egidia Maxwell. NRS GD137/4022 see [http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD137%2f4022&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=Scrymgeour&ko=p&r=&ro=s&df=1428&dt=1429&di=y]

As a young man he was described as John Scrymgeour claviger (arms bearer) when he appeared at the monastery of Culross as a witness to a Royal Chater granted in favour of Thomas Lychton on 2 January 1406/07 RMS Vol.i 891 see [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101038096846;view=1up;seq=403]He was also described as claviger when he appeared at Ayr on 13 Oct 1409 RMS Vol.i 922 see [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101038096846;view=1up;seq=426] and eleven days later24 Oct 1409 when witnessing a Royal Charter in favour of Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick. On his father's death he inherited the titles of Constable of Dundee and Bannerman to the King.John, was retoured in the half lands of Kirkton of Strathdichty and Baldovan as heir to his deceased father Sir James Scrymgeour , Constable of Dundee in October 1411. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family papers no. 65 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/4/mode/2up]He was also retoured in the Inverkeithing lands in Fife called Hillfield, South Borland and Marisfield. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family papers no.149 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/10/mode/2up]

John was also designated "of Glassary." Dougal Drummond made a Resignation to John Scrymgeour Lord of Glassary of all right he had to the land and tenements of Inathray on 10 June 1412. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family papers no. 308 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/20/mode/2up]
John Scrymgeour married first about 1412 to Katherine Ogilvy. Katherine was very probably mother to his eldest children. She died about 1420.
He married, secondly, Isabella Oliphant, said to be daughter of Sir William Oliphant of Aberdalgie and Marian de Berwick. She died about 1426.
A Royal Charter by James I dated 7 April 1428, confirmed a charter by Sir John
Scrymgeour, Knight, dated 31 December 1427, whereby he granted an
annualrent to a chaplain in Dundee parish church for the souls of Sir
James, his father, Egidia Maxwell, his mother, Katherine Ogilvyand Isabella Oliphant, his wives. NRS GD137/4022 see [http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD137%2f4022&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=Scrymgeour&ko=p&r=&ro=s&df=1428&dt=1429&di=y]

About 1430 John married Marion Abernethy, widow of Sir Robert Maitland of Lethington,.

Sir John Scrymgeour had issue:
* James his heir* Alexander who gained Master's degree at University, was Rector of Glassary.
* Hercules who became canon of Argyll
* David who gained the title "of Fardell."
* Elizabeth mar. John Lyon, third Lord Glamis.
* John son of third marriage was known as Jak, burgess of Dundee.
On 24 June 1420, Richard Fordownie resigned the lands of Auchinharie and Pitdragon into the hands of the constable of Dundee. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family Papers no.78 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/6/mode/2up]
John was knighted by 1424. RMS Vol.ii 3 see [https://archive.org/details/registrummagnisi02scot/page/n13]
On 23 June 1436, an Indenture was agreed between John Scrymgeour, Constable of Dundee and John Jeorie , burgess of Dundee regarding a piece of land outside the burgh gate at Cowgait. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family Papers No.189 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/12/mode/2up]
Two confusing records appear in the Inventory of Scrymgeour Family Writs. Both deal with the same transfer of the lands of Galray in Angus. The first is a charter made on 15 March 1444/45 whereby Sir John Oliphant of Aberdargie granted the £10 lands of Glaray to Sir John Scrymgeour constable of Dundee, his sister son. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family papers no. 799 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/48/mode/2up] The second is the Sasine of this land given by John Oliphant to John Scrymgeour constable of Dundee, his sister son dated 1462. (The date of the Seising is suspect as Sir John Oliphant had deceased before 1455). Inventory of Scrymgeour Family Papers No.738 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/46/mode/2up] If sister son was correct this would imply that this Sir John of 1444 was the son of the second marriage of the Sir John of this biography. There is no other evidence to suggest this and it appears that errors has been introduced here.
When dealing with matters in his barony of Glassary in Argyll he was designed thereof. On 30 January 1445, the King granted a Discharge that the Sheriff of Argyll would not trouble John Scrymgeour of Glassary for his duties and service of the lands of Glassary and that during his lifetime John should pay these to the Sheriff of Bute. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family Papers No.322 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/22/mode/2up]

On 27 Jan 1459/60 Sir John resigned part of his estate. He granted to James Scrymgeour his son and heir apparent giving him Glassary and the fee of Inverkeithing lands called Hillfield and Borland, RMS Vol.ii 742 see [https://archive.org/details/registrummagnisi02scot/page/154]
Sir John was alive on 15 Jul 1465 when he executed a Procuratory of Resignation in favour of his son James. Invent. of Srymgeour Family Papers no 205 see [https://archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso30scotuoft#page/14/mode/2up]. He may have died later in 1465 as a writ of 31 Dec 1465 implies he had deceased whereas another writ of 8 Aug 1466 suggests he was still alive..
It is said that Sir John Scrymgeour was slain by Andrew Gray of Cluny due to a dispute between the Constable and Lord Gray but evidence is lacking.
