Various sources, including Complete Peerage and Scots Peerage, make him son of either Patrick (m. Marjory Comyn) or his father Patrick (m. Cecily, daughter of Ada Balliol). Richardson in Royal Ancestry Vol 2 p 220-221 does not list him with enough info to be sure, but does say that Patrick (m. Cecily) had a son Alexander, while Patrick (m. Comyn) is listed with only a single son, Patrick (next Earl). Cawley, Medlands database, has him as son of Patrick (m. Comyn). This matter is undecided.
