== Biography ==Gospatric II's rights to the inherited lands of Lothian of Dunbar, were confirmed by the King. As the leader of the men of Lothian, he was killed in the Battle of the Standard 22 Aug 1138.Wikipedia: Gospatric II, Earl of Lothian He was one of the nine signatories to the charter of Scone, about 1115.
===Parents===Some of the most recent historic researching regarding Allerdale, Northumberland, Cumberland, Carlisle, Lothian and all of Middle England, is the 2015 work by Neil McGuigan, St Andrews Univ. He recognized the confusing commentaries for the 10th 11th Centuries but concluded on Gospatric II parentage and property. :"geography and chronology point overwhelmingly to Gospatric son of Maldred (& Ealdgyth, grandgaughter of King Æthelred), who fathered Dolfin, Waltheof, and a younger Gospatric. The first, his eldest son, appears to have ruled in Carlisle when he was expelled by William Rufus in 1092. We also know that Allerdale, the territory specific to Gospatric’s Writ, was controlled by Gospatric's second son Waltheof in the early twelfth century. Given the bigger picture—fathers usually passing their holdings to their sons, and sons usually inheriting available patrimonies—it would be rather surprising if it turned out to be a pure coincidence that the antecessor of Dolfin and Waltheof and their father bore the same name" Neil McGuigan, N. (2015). Gospatric previously was profiled as illegitimate son of Gospatric I, Earl of Northumberland based on a memo from 1275. his mother is NOT the sister of Edmund.
Medlands judgement concludes...It seems more likely that Gospatrick was his father’s oldest legitimate son as his father’s title was transmitted to his descendants. But this comes after reciting several other findings. Simeon of Durham names Dolfin, Walther and Cospatric as the sons of Gospatrick[1407]. A memorandum dated to [1275] records that "Earl Cospatryk formerly earl of Dunbar in Scotland had a brother Dolfin earl of Northumbarland …both…bastards", that they had "a legitimate brother Waldeve and a legitimate sister Etheldreda…of one father and one mother."
My conclusion is to go with Gospatric II as a younger son (legitimate) of Gospatric Dunbar At this time Gospatric is considered as the younger of his father's 3 legitimate sons, after Dolfin and Waltheof. See narrative above.
===Marriage & Children===His wife's name is unknown.
4 children are listed in Cawley MedLands. The most significant descendants were from his son Gospatric III, who was father to Waltheof (father of Patrick Earl of Dunbar). Clearly at this time March 2017 others are attached to the profile and work and discussion is needed to clear the unproven or inaccurate descendants.* Gospatric (d.1166) m.
