The confusion in the given name of Francis Stiles' wife was caused by the following from the ''The Stiles Family in America:'':"In regard to the maiden name of Mr. Francis Stiles' wife, I am somewhat in doubt, but I take it to have been Joan _____ probably the 'Joan Stiles, [aged] 35 years,' who appears in the passenger list of the vessel which conveyed the Saltonstall party to America. This Joan could not have been the Joan, sister of the four Stiles brothers, since, .... she was married just previous to their embarkation and remained in England." Stiles, Henry Reed. Previously in the ''The Stiles Family in America'' (p. 22) Henry Stiles had stated that the Joan who accompanied the family was their sister.
It is clear from probate documents for Sarah (____) (Stiles) Clark, that she was the mother of all of Francis' children and his widow, leaving no reason to believe Joan, who sailed on the ''Christian'', was the wife of Francis.
