== Biography ==Isabella was the second daughter of Malaise Strathearn and Margery Ross.
Malise earl of Strathearn gained the title of Earl of Caithness and Orkney about 1330. However he was stripped of his ancient family estate of Strathearn by King David II. This may have moved Malise to take action to insure that his northern possessions did not escape his family. Thus on 28 May 1344, at Inverness Malise described as earl of the earldom of Strathearn, Caithness and Orkney with his spouse Marjory placed his daughter Isabella in the ward of her uncle William, Earl of Ross granting him the marriage and constituting her his heir and successor in the earldom of Caithness. NRS GD90/1/26 see RMS i, App. 1, 150 see In this transaction Malise described her as the heiress of the earldom of Caithness.
Her uncle soon arranged a worthy marriage for Isabel as she married about 1345to William SInclair of Roslin/Rosslyn.James Balfour Paul, The Scots Peerage : Founded On Wood's Ed. Her second son David St Clair exchanged his rights which he had in Orkney and Shetland, derived from Isabel, for lands of Newburgh and Auchdale in Aberdeenshire the Royal Charter of 10 June 1391. The charter named his mother as Isabelle de Sancto Claro. Her eldest son and heir Henry who granted the exchange was designed in that charter as Henry earl of Orkney lord of Roslin. Isabella went to Norway with her son Henry and nephews Alexander del Ard and Malise Sperra to put their claims to the earldom of Orkney. King Hacon granted her son Henry the title of Earl of Orkney Lord of Shetland in 1377.
