== Biography ==
John Stewart (Stuart, commonly used in France) was born in Darnley, Scotland to [[Stewart-1532|Alexander Stewart]] and his second wife [[Keith-220|Janet Keith]]. Other sources cite the first wife [[Turnbull-246|Marguerite Turnbull]] as his mother. Cawley, C. (n.d.) Medieval Lands v. 4. He was killed at the Battle of the Herrings on 12 February 1429.

This would seem indicate John was a man of some great reputation by this time. * 1419 (October) - He was one of the three commanders sent to France as part of an expeditionary force sent by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland during the captivity of James I. His cousin Earl of Buchan and Earl of Wigtown were the other two commanders. The force landed at Rochelle. He was accompanied by his brother William. * 1420 - He became known as Constable of the army in France. * 1421 - He fought with great valor in the major Scots victory at the Battle of Baugé in France * 1422 - For his part in the fight at the Battle of Baugé he was granted the lordships of Concressault in Berry.
