* The name is first recorded in 1248 when '''Henricus de Edmundiston''' was witness to a charter. (Alexander III.)
* There are two residences of the name of Edmonstone with estates attached to them ; one in Midlothian, and in the parish of Newton, four miles to the east of Edinburgh ; the other in the parish of Biggar, and county of Lanark.
* In 1359, in the reign of David II, an inquest before the Baillie of Musselborough, declared that "Henricus de Edmundiston" had died and that "Johannes de Edmundiston" was his legitimate son and heir. It added that he held land of the Abbey of Dumfermline.
* Edenham or Ednam, in Roxburghshire, was a residence of the elder branch of the family (the chief residence when Edmonstone was sold) for nearly four hundred years. These lands were acquired by a grant from Robert the Second, 'cum advocatione Ecclesie et Hospitalis ejusdem Johanni de Edmonstoun et Isobelle Comitisse de Douglas filie nostre carissime/ A.D. 1390, and confirmed by a charter of confirmation of Robert the Third, April 25, 1392.
* Keith, Catalogue of Scottish Bishops, etc.= in his account of religious houses, says: ' The Hospital of Ednam was dedicated to St. Lawrence, and seems to have been founded by the Edmonstones of Ednam, who were patrons of this place.' It had, however, been founded as far back as the reign of King William the Lion (c. 1143- 4 Dec 1214), and St. Leonard is spoken of as its tutelary saint in the Register of the Charters of the Great Seal. It may have been restored and re-dedicated by the Edmonstouns.

The chapel of Nathansthirn was then upgraded to become a parish church, while that of Newton continued as a chapel.
