== Biography ==
:Sir John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus & suo jure uxoris Lord of Abernethy (died 1331) was a medieval Scottish nobleman.
:Stewart was the son of Sir Alexander Stewart of Bonkyll, grandson of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland and an unknown mother. Sir Alexander died c. 1319, and Stewart inherited his father's estates in Berwickshire, centred upon the barony of Bonkyll and Preston.
:In 1328 he married Margaret de Abernethy, heiress to the Lordship of Abernethy. Her father Sir Alexander de Abernethy was the last of the Gaelic lords of Abernethy, descendants of Gille Míchéil, Earl of Fife. Stewart assumed his wife's titles, and was further ennobled by Robert I of Scotland in 1329, being created Earl of Angus. The Earldom of Angus had been forfeited by the previous holder, Robert de Umfreville, before 1314, for choosing the losing side during the Wars of Scottish Independence, although he continued to style himself Earl until his death in 1325.
:It is through John Stewart's granddaughter, Margaret's illicit relationship with William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, that the Earldom of Angus, Lordship of Abernethy, and the comitatus associated with it passed on to the Douglases in the person of George Douglas (the first Red Douglas). This close connection of the Douglas Earls of Angus with the House of Stewart, was to have large implications for the latter's future struggles with the Black Douglases.
:Stewart was invested with Knighthood in November 1331, but died just two weeks later. He was succeeded by his son Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus.From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, ''John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus'', 16 November 2013 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stewart,_1st_Earl_of_Angus

:AKA: 14th\1st Earl of /Angus/, John Stewart
John Stewart was created 1st Earl of Angus by charter on 15 June 1329.
He was invested as a Knight on at the coronation of David II, 24 November 1331.
John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus, so created 1329, probably because of his marriage (papal dispensation 24 Oct 1328) to Margaret, Lady of Abernethy (living 1370), elder daughter and coheir of Alexander Abernethy of that Ilk, and died 9 Dec 1331. [Burke's Peerage]

EARLDOM of ANGUS (SCT) (XIV, 1) 1329
:John Stewart, of Bonkyl, co. Berwick, son and heir of Sir Alexander Stewart, of the same, succeeded his father 1319, and is styled in a charter dated 15 Jun 1329, Earl of Angus. He was knighted 24 Nov 1331, at the coronation of David II. He m. by Papal dispensation dated 24 Oct 1328 (being within the fourth degree of consanguinity), Margaret, 1st daughter of Sir Alexander Abernathy. He d. 9 Dec 1331. His widow was living 1370. [Complete Peerage I:153]
:Note: BP has John as 1st Earl because they restart their numbering with every creation of the title. CP has John as 14th Earl because (I think, as there is no other explanation) they count the three male descendants of Gilbert de Umfreville, 3rd (English)/10th (Scottish) Earl of Angus, as potential Earls of Angus. But since the Scots gave the Earldom to John in 1329, well before Gilbert, 3rd/10th Earl died in 1381, THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE SCOTS RECOGNIZED THE ENGLISH AS EARLS OF ANGUS during this period (Robert the Bruce was crowned in 1306, and must have gotten around to reseating the various earls before his death in 1429). Therefore I think CP is plain foolish; and should be making John Stewart the 11th Earl of Angus (SCT) after Gilbert's brief tenure (1325-1329) as the 10th Earl (SCT), even though he may have held a worthless English title as 3rd Earl of Angus until his death. If CP thinks that Gilbert's son (Thomas, d. 1387), grandson (Thomas, d. 1391), and great grandson (Gilbert, d. 1421) inherited a title, then it would be the worthless English title making them the 4th, 5th, and 6th Earl of whatever part of Angus lies in England. CP doesn't even address the problem of having the 14th Earl die well before the 11th Earl, and before the 12th & 13th Earl were even born.
