Odessa came to Minnesota in April of 1938, with her mother, Ella R. Hodges (Oakes). Her mother came from Virginia to Minnesota to meet a man (George W. Wood), who she had met on a 'Lonely Hearts Club'. They had been writing back and forth for some time. Ella and George soon married. Odessa, then married the man who lived across the road, Burt Jefferson (Cap) Stiles. They then had 7 children. Ella and Odessa came to Minnesota in April of 1938, and Ella and George married that same year, Odessa and Burt married December 8, 1939. It was a hard life that Odessa had come from in the hills of Southeastern Virginia. She told of how she received a large scar on her knee. Her and a sister, Oakey, were cutting wood, and the axe slipped and the leg was badly cut, which was kept from their mother, so they would not get in trouble for being careless. They had wrapped it with a 'not so sterile' piece of cloth. It got infected, and her mother knew she would need medical attention, so she had to be taken 'over the next mountain' by mule to the nearest Dr. He then had 'packed the wound', after cleaning it, with gauze. She told of how the pieces of gauze had worked themselves out over a long period of time.

Mrs. Stiles, 87, of 6333 120th St. S.W., Stewartville, a homemaker, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester where she had been a patient since June 9. Odessa Mae Belcher was born March 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Va., and lived there until moving to High Forest with her mother in 1939. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Burt "Cap" Stiles in Rochester and they lived in High Forest. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alden of Rochester, and Gordon (Barbara) and Burt, both of High Forest; three daughters, Edith Whitmore of Winona, and Myrtle Swanson and Elda (Raymond) Broker, both of Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Oakey Mounce of Martinsville, Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter and seven brothers and sisters. Odessa Mae Belcher was born March 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Va., and lived there until moving to High Forest with her mother in 1939. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Burt "Cap" Stiles in Rochester and they lived in High Forest. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alden of Rochester, and Gordon (Barbara) and Burt, both of High Forest; three daughters, Edith Whitmore of Winona, and Myrtle Swanson and Elda (Raymond) Broker, both of Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Oakey Mounce of Martinsville, Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter and seven brothers and sisters. Wood), who she had met on a 'Lonely Hearts Club'. They had been writing back and forth for some time. They had wrapped it with a 'not so sterile' piece of cloth. It got infected, and her mother knew she would need medical attention, so she had to be taken 'over the next mountain' by mule to the nearest Dr. He then had 'packed the wound', after cleaning it, with gauze. She told of how the pieces of gauze had worked themselves out over a long period of time.

It got infected, and her mother knew she would need medical attention, so she had to be taken 'over the next mountain' by mule to the nearest Dr. He then had 'packed the wound', after cleaning it, with gauze. She told of how the pieces of gauze had worked themselves out over a long period of time.

Mrs. Stiles, 87, of 6333 120th St. S.W., Stewartville, a homemaker, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester where she had been a patient since June 9. Odessa Mae Belcher was born March 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Va., and lived there until moving to High Forest with her mother in 1939. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Burt "Cap" Stiles in Rochester and they lived in High Forest. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alden of Rochester, and Gordon (Barbara) and Burt, both of High Forest; three daughters, Edith Whitmore of Winona, and Myrtle Swanson and Elda (Raymond) Broker, both of Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Oakey Mounce of Martinsville, Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter and seven brothers and sisters. Odessa Mae Belcher was born March 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Va., and lived there until moving to High Forest with her mother in 1939. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Burt "Cap" Stiles in Rochester and they lived in High Forest. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alden of Rochester, and Gordon (Barbara) and Burt, both of High Forest; three daughters, Edith Whitmore of Winona, and Myrtle Swanson and Elda (Raymond) Broker, both of Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Oakey Mounce of Martinsville, Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter and seven brothers and sisters. Bob Sinex officiating. Burial will be in High Forest Cemetery. Mrs. Stiles, 87, of 6333 120th St. S.W., Stewartville, a homemaker, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester where she had been a patient since June 9. Odessa Mae Belcher was born March 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Va., and lived there until moving to High Forest with her mother in 1939. On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Burt "Cap" Stiles in Rochester and they lived in High Forest. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alden of Rochester, and Gordon (Barbara) and Burt, both of High Forest; three daughters, Edith Whitmore of Winona, and Myrtle Swanson and Elda (Raymond) Broker, both of Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Oakey Mounce of Martinsville, Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter and seven brothers and sisters.
