William Hastings

(Abt 1110 - Bef 1166)

==Biography==He appears in fiscal records for 1159-62, and also in various charters summarized by Landon and Clarence. They mention his wife Helewisa, his son and heir Robert, and various other relatives. Many are concerned with the family's grants to the nuns of Wix.Landon, L. (1928), "The Barony of Little Easton and the Family of Hastings", Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society. New Series, Vol. 19, Part 3.
Clarence Smith, following Landon, reasons that William was dead before 1166, when fiscal records show that his son Robert was holding the Barony of Little Easton. Clarence Smith J. A., (1966), "Hastings of Little Easton (part 1)", Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society. Vol. 2, Part 1.

==Note==
This person is a difficult one in medieval genealogy, and we must be careful not to confuse him with several contemporaries.
Especially in the 19th century there were proposals that this person might be the same as 2 contemporaries, but there are problems with those proposals. To use the books of Keats-Rohan as a reference point, the profile here is "Willelm de Hastings" (Domesday Descendants). But in fact the reason that his family later were referred to as being "of Hastings" (normally not spelled in ways normal for the place Hastings) is unknown and might even represent a misunderstanding, such as a distortion of the place name Little Easton.
Landon notes one charter (A.13893) where William the son of Robert, as he was apparently usually called, was more specifically named as "William fitz Robert de Hastings". His children used the Hastings name more consistently, but not always, with Robert his son often being referred to as Robert de Aistan or Aiston (Landon p.177).Landon, L. (1928), "The Barony of Little Easton and the Family of Hastings", Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society. New Series, Vol. 19, Part 3.

The two men he is sometimes confused with are:*The second "Willelm de Hastings" in ''Domesday Descendants'' who was a part of the family of "Ingelran de Ou" described in ''Domesday People''. This family were clearly named after Hastings itself, in Sussex. They also had a William, son of Robert ( "fitz Robert") in this period. Keats-Rohan says they probably had descendants with the Hastings surname mentioned in the cartulary of Ramsey, and possessing land in Huntingdonshire, for example in Gidding and Liddington.Apart from Keats-Rohan see Round, J. H. (1911), The King's Serjeants & Officers of State with their Coronation Services. https://archive.org/stream/kingsserjeantsof00rounuoft#page/362/mode/2up and Clark, G. T. C. (1869), "The Rise and Race of Hastings" (1st of 3 parts), Archaeological Journal, Vol. 26. https://archive.org/stream/archaeologicalj02unkngoog#page/n32/mode/2up Though it is clear this man did have a connection to Essex, caused by the marriage of this family with the Waleran family, as explained by Eyton, Juliana, the wife of the William in Sussex, "was already a wealthy heiress in 1130 (Rot. Pip. 31 Hen. I, p.58)".Robert William Eyton "Antiquities of Shropshire, Volume 5 http://hdl.handle.net/2027/njp.32101073591883?urlappend=%3Bseq=154
*In Domesday Descendants (p.507), there are two men, "Willelm filius Hugonis de Hastings" and "Willelm de Hastings dispensator", who are normally considered to be [[Hastings-629|one]]. The two sides of this person represent his West Midlands holdings and his East Anglian holdings. This man's family not only also had holdings near William fitz Robert of Little Easton, but were somehow related. (One relationship can be stated with some confidence: His aunt Edith's second husband Maurice de Windresor, was maternal uncle (avunculus) to his heir named Ralf de Hastings, and this Ralf was paternal uncle to his own heir William de Hastings, son of Hugo, and dispensator.) Furthermore, while this William was clearly too young to be confused the with other two mentioned, his grandfather was named William and less is known of him.
