== Biography ==Roger was a minor when his father died in 1225; his wardship went first to William (I) Longespée, earl of Salisbury, but was transferred to Alexander II, king of Scots, in 1226, when Salisbury died. Roger had married Alexander's sister Isabella at Alnwick in May 1225.
On 22 May 1233, Roger was knighted at Gloucester by Henry III and invested with his earldom. In late July he appeared at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, among the supporters of his rebellious uncle Richard Marshal, earl of Pembroke, but by 8 September Roger had submitted to the king and recovered all his property save Framlingham Castle, Suffolk, which the king held until February 1234. In January 1236, at the wedding of King Henry and Queen Eleanor, Roger laid unsuccessful claim to the stewardship of England.
Roger died childless on 3 or 4 July 1270 and was buried at Thetford, Norfolk, two months after resigning as marshal of England in favor of his nephew Roger (IV) Bigod, who became his heir. [Conflicts with having had daughter Margery - see sources below. More sleuthing to be done.]
