The Priory was once one of the great medieval buildings of Wales. In the 12th century the Lacy family assumed patronage of the priory, endowed it with land and it soon became famous, enjoying royal patronage. In 1538 the priory was closed by Henry VIII, its lands were sold and the priory was left to decay. At present, the fine ruins of this Priory seen today are in the care of the Wales government group 'Cadw.'
Welsh attacks in the 13th century forced the Priory to move to Gloucester and build a second priory there - known as Llanthony Secunda Priory.
