== Biography ==
Walter's actual birth date is unknown but as he was first married before 1378 it is probable he was born before 1360.
Always a supporter of the king James I, Walter eventually turned against the monarch and plotted his assassination in 1437. He was tried for murder, severely tortured and finally executed on March 26, 1437 in Edinburgh.

* Lord of Brechin in 1378.
* 3rd Earl of Caithness
* Baron Cortachy
* Earl Palatine of Strathern
* 2nd Earl of Caithness
He held the office of Great Justicar of Scotland.
On 26 March 1437 his honours and estates were declared forfeit.
