Alan FitzFlaald

(Abt 1075 - Bef May 1121)

}
There are two alternative reconstructions of this family. In one version (Wikipedia) there is one Flaald and 3 Alans (father, brother and son of Flaald). In the other version (MedLands) there is one Alan and 3 Flaalds (father, brother and son of Alan). The identification of records and assignment of dates is radically different in the two versions. There is no way of reconciling them and no clear advantage to either.

What we can say is# William, Walter and Jordan were sons of Alan son of Flaald, but '''nothing clear can be said about Flaald''' (since records that might be assigned to him might alternatively be assigned to other Flaalds, if they existed).# Many attempts have been made to attach unsourced connections. For instance, there is a bogus descent from Charlemagne, and a descent from fictitious Thanes of Lochaber to which other Scottish families are also connected. These spurious lines are being collected into a separate tree detached from the main tree.
'''}''' with this profile if doing so will recreate spurious connections.

See [[FitzFlaad-8]] for the detached material.

Daughter Sibyl is shown by MedLands but others disagree.
Son Walter had a brother Simon, but possibly a half-brother on his mother's side. His mother did have a son or stepson Simon by her 2nd marriage.

=== Origin ===For centuries, the origins of the Stewart dynasty have been clouded in mystery, obscured by everything from Boece's 1527 ''Historia Gentis Scotorum'' to Shakespeare's ''Macbeth''. At one point, it was thought the Stewarts descended from Banquo's son, Fleance, who was said to have married a daughter of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. The claim that Alan fitz Flaad was a son of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn is here presented as part of this WikiTree profile for reasons unknown (without evidence and without citation).}
Now accepted as the definitive work on Alan's ancestry is the ''Scots Peerage'' by James Balfour Paul, which states, "the Stewarts or Stuarts are of Breton origin, descended from a family which held the office of Senescal or Steward of Dol." Alan, who accompanied King Henry I to England, was the son of Fledaldus or Flaald, Senescal of Dol. Alan was born at Dol in the Duchy of Brittany.
Alan was the hereditary steward of the Bishop of Dol. Originally inherited by his father's brother, Alan the Senescal, who died without issue, the lands and title reverted to Fledaldus or Flaald, who was the father of Alan fitz Flaald. Alan was born at [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dol-de-Bretagne Dol-de-Bretagne]. The birth date 1078 is a guess, based on other known dates.

=== Marriage and Children ===Alan married Avelina de Hesdin, daughter of Ernulf de Hesdin. After Alan's death, Avelina married, as her 2nd, to Robert fitz Walter, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk.

Children of Alan and Avelina:# William fitz Alan, eldest son (d. 1160), Sheriff of Shropshire 1137; mar niece of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester.# Walter fitz Alan, second son, became 1st hereditary High Steward of Scotland.
# Jordan fitz Alan, of Burton
# Simon fitz Alan

=== Property and Positions ===Soon after the accession of King Henry I of England in 1100, Alan and his son,
Sheriff of shropshireEntered by Theresa Bashford. According to Wikipedia, Alan held the lands formerly held by the sheriffs of Shropshire, but was not a sheriff himself.
Alan was involved, with King Henry I of England, in a number of of grants of property to religious institutions. Among others, Alan gave the manor of Eaton, near Norwich, and possibly the advowson of the church at Langham, Norfolk to Norwich Cathedral. Alan also witnessed or participated in other property transfers, in service to the king.

=== Death and Legacy ===Avelina made a claim for her dower in April/May 1121, so Alan's death must have been before this date (probably by only a few months).
Early researcher, Eyton, read in in Dugdale's ''History of Warwickshire'' that in 1114, Adeliza made a gift of land to Burton Abbey. Eyton assumed that Adliza was identical to Avelina, and therefore set Alan's date of death by 1114. However, we now know this was not correct; that "Adeliza, mother of Sybil, and wife of Hubert Baldran, was quite distinct from Avelina." The death date of 1114 persists, despite our updated information.
Alan's eldest son, William, was the ancestor of the FitzAlan Earls of Arundel. Alan's second son, Walter, was the ancestor of the Stewart Kings of Scotland. Alan's son, Jordan, inherited lands in Brittany and restored the Sele Priory with the mill at Burton (given by his father). The family is considered ancestors of the Stewarts of England.
