Neil is the progenitor of the MacLeans of Ross whose descendants are known as 'Chlaim Liarne' (race of the Iron Sword). He has sometimes been confused with his first cousin, [[Maclean-519|Neil]], son of [[Maclean-518|John Dubh]].
