Donald is believed to be the illegitimate son of [[Maclean-188|Lachlan ''Bronnach'']] and [[Maclean-976|Margaret Maclean]], daughter of [[MacLean-403|Ferchar]] of Kingairloch, Morvern and grandchild of [[MacLean-402|Hector Reaganach, I of Lochbuie]]. He became laird of Ardgour.
