=== Biography ===
Hector is perhaps best known for his role in a sea battle that afterward came to be known as the Battle of Bloody Bay, of the north-west coast of Mull. The battle, fought in the 1480s, was between [[MacDonald-1948|John MacDonald, Lord of the Isles]], and his son, Angus Og who was in revolt of his father.
Hector Odhar was in command of John MacDonald's fleet. Duart's galley was boarded and eventually taken and Hector Odhar was captured along with his master, John MacDonald. Clan Gillean, p. 59.
In 1495 Hector was given royal confirmation of family charters given to his ancestors in 1390, 1409 and 1431. Unfortunately he did not receive any additional charters for new lands acquired since 1431.Warriors and Priests, p. 74. Perhaps this was seen as a failure because on October 3, 1496 his illegitimate son, [[Maclean-37|Lachlan ''Cattanach'']] was legitimated and five days later Hector resigned all his lands and offices to the king who frowarded them to Lachlan and gave Hector a liferent interest.Warriors and Priests, p. 75.
While it has been stated by several genealogists/historians, that Hector Odhar fell at the battle of Flodden, MacLean-Bristol states that Hector was already dead by 1509.Warriors and Priests, p. 83.
