!. -O'Bjolan's, the main line of which soon known by the surname "Ross" 9rather than the Gaelic Mac Taggart or O'Beolan)2. -Sir Robert Gordon, ("Earldom of Scotland P. 36 ") shows that the Rosses were originally designated O'Beolan and Gillanders, indiscriminately, according to the writer's or speaker's fancy. In the same work p. 46, we find that the Earls of Ross were called O'Beolan's as late as 1333, for Sir Robert informs us , writing of the battle of Halidon Hill, that "in this field was Hugh Beolan Earl of Ross, Slain".Hugh was born about 1318. He is the son of [[O'Beolan-8|Hugh O'Beolan]] and [[Graham-8632|Margaret Graham]]. clanmacFarlanegenealogy.info/genealogyTNGWebsite/getperson.php?personID=14358&tree=cc.

The Ross's of Balnagowan succeeded the Earl's as chiefs of Clan Ross, after the death in 1372 of William O'Beolan, the last Earl of Ross in his line, It appears that clan Ross anticipated the need for a new Chief when it became apparent that the Earldom would pass to Sir Walter Leslie, and that Hugh would be deprived of his rightful title as direct heir male to the Earldom of Ross. Thus, a gift inn 1357 of the lands of Easter Allan and Balnagowan was confirmed in a Charter by King David II in 1371. To Hugh of Rarichies.
Hugh O'Beolan and his brother William Took the name o the County, Ross, The first Laird of Balnagowan, Married Margaret Graham of Ury.. Their Children were William Ross, Jean Ross and David Ross.
