Parentage proven by marriage record. Some researchers have him as the son of Solomon D. Prather & Eva Van Nice, but this must be incorrect; in fact, the 1895 Iowa Census listing for Soloman's family shows no John (would have been seven years old, and I see no other primary record with a son John for Solomon.
