Emigrated sometime before 1650 to Maryland. Very soon he applied for land grants and the first recorded was "Cheney's Hill" located on the South River in Anne Arundel County. He continued to negotiate land warrants and became one of the largest land holders in the South River Hundred. In 1653 he patented: "Cheney's Neck" 100 A. ; "Cheney's Resolution" 400 A.; "Cheney's Hazard" 100 A.; "Cheney's Rest" 300 A.; and "Cheney's Purchase" 300 A, the total amount was 1110 acres.
