John Sumpter

"John Alexander Sumpter, 94, 2934 Tudor Way, died Thursda y at a localnursing home. Memorial service will be 4pm Fri day at Fisher Funeral Homewith Pastor Wayne bryant officia ting. Cremated remians will be interredat Franklin Butte C emetery in Scio.

Friends who wish may contriubte in his memory to the Masoni c Home atForest Grove or the Shirners Hospital for Cripple d Children in Portland.

He was born May 27, 1880 at Asotin, Wash., traveling as a b oy with hisparents is a covered wagon to Ellensburg and Co palis, Wash., and toBurns. He was a descendant of Oregon p ioneers Peter Bilyeu, who arrivedin Oregon October 17, 185 0, and Alexander Sumpter, who arrived in OregonAugust 20 , 1853.

He settled on a farm one half-mile west of Sandersons Bridg e in LinnCounty and had lived in several places in Willame tte Valley, includingCrabtree for about 20 years. He als o resided in Salem, Lake Oswego,Tangent, Albany, Salem and , for the past few years, in Sumner,Washington.

He had been a section foreman for the Southern Pacific Rail road.

He married Vesta Rena Miller, who died in 1919. He marrie d Lulu (Mills)Freeman, who died in 1939. He married Birdi e Bilyeu Smartwood May 1,1953 in Richmond, California. Sh e survives.

He was a member of the Christian church, a 70-year Mason an d member ofSt. John Lodge No. 17, AF & AM, Bayley chapte r No. 8, Royal Arch Masons,Adoniram Council No. 9, Royal a nd Select Masons, and Willamette chapterNo. 39, Order of E astern Star in Shedd.

In addition to his widow, survivors include four sons, Clau d Ruel ofLincoln City, John Rocky of Richmond, Calif., Les ter Floyd of Albany andDon Wayne of Beaverton; 14 grandchi ldren; 26 great-grandchildren."

Colonel Buck Sumpter... Son of Great Uncle John Sumpter... also faught inRev. War as Capt of Artillery... at one time had orders to spike hiscannon but disobeyed and cept 2 cannon firing and when the smoke clearedaway the British was running and won the battle. The Americans hadalready destroyed considerable of their own property expecting to retreat.
