Marcus Ratliff Martin

Rev. Marcus R. Martin, age 84 of Clarkesville, passed away peacefully at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born in Dawson County on February 07, 1926, he was the son of the lat e Utah and Ola Pirkle Martin. He was also preceded in death by his bro ther, Merritt Martin.
At the age of 18, Marcus graduated from Sardis High School in May of 1 944 and enlisted in the United States Army where he served honorably i n the 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. He was the reci pient of the Purple Heart and the President’s Citation.
He began his college career at Young Harris College, from which he gra duated before continuing his education at North Georgia College, Unive rsity of Georgia and Emory University Candler School of Theology.
During his 52 years of active ministry, which began in 1950, Rev. Mart in served 18 churches throughout the North Georgia Conference of the U nited Methodist Church and after retirement, Rev. Martin served seven years as a local pastor in two churches in Stephens County. He was par t of the construction of the new sanctuary at Cornelia United Methodis t Church, where he served from 62-68.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bobbie Coleman Martin; daughte r, Marcia Martin of Clarkesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert & Joan Martin of Winterville and David & Janet Martin of Lilburn; grandc hildren, Christopher Martin and his fiancée, Lucy Edwards of Athens, T onia & Joao Godoy of Avon, CT, Olivia & Cordelia Martin of Lilburn; gr eat grandchildren, Alex, Christian and Natalie Godoy of Avon, CT; brot her and sister-in-law, Milton, Sr. & Damaris Martin of Gainesville; si sters, Mildred Martin of Gainesville, Mattie Jane Talley of Murrayvill e; sister and brother-in-law, Montene & Jimmy Lewis of Gainesville; an d a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are 11:00 am Friday, March 26, 2010, at Cornelia Firs t United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Price, Dr. Charlie Wilson, Re v. Ryan Seawright and Dr. Charlie Green officiating. Interment will fo llow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Dr. Phil DeMore officiating and fu ll military honors will be provided. The family will receive friends a t the funeral home from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Cornelia First United Me thodist Church, PO Box 948, Cornelia, GA 30531, Clarkesville United Me thodist Church, PO Box 365, Clarkesville, GA 30523 or to the United Me thodist Murphy Harpst Children’s Centers, 740 Fletcher Street, Cedarto wn, GA 30125-9907.
