Individual Details
Albert 'Angelo' LOVERDE
(15 May 1907 - Mar 1984)
Angelo Loverde was born on 15 May 1907 in Chicago. He was baptised on 2 June 1907 at Church of the Assumption, 313 W. Illinois St., Chicago. One of the baptism sponsors was Rosaria Scimeca, who I believe was his maternal grandmother.
Angelo later changed his name to the less-ethnic name Albert. His son (my uncle) Vernon Loverde told me in May 2003 that Grandpa had changed his name while in high school, and had chosen the name Albert because of his admiration for Albert Einstein. In an e-mail dated 19 August 2002, my mother Elizabeth Rosaria Loverde said he changed his name when he first went into practice. In any case, professionally he was known as A.A. Loverde.
The 1920 census shows Albert inthe household of his father Santo Loverde, living at 148 Division St. in Chicago.
(According to his daughter Elizabeth Loverde, "Grandpa graduated from the University of Chicago in 1928. He then worked for a year before going into medical school, and his four years of medical school were from 1929 to 1933(the worst years of the depression -- another reason to admire his dedication). Hismedical school was the University of Washington in St. Louis. My mother [Charlotte Inez Prather Loverde] did her nurse's training at the same instituation, and that's how they met. My brother Vernon also went there to medical school. He and my father went back together once for an alumni reunion -- I think it was my father's 45th and my brother's 10th."
Albert and Charlotte Inez Prather were married in Chicago on 23 or 24 October 1936 (the copy of their marriage certificate is hard to read). The certificate shows that they were married by aCatholic priest, but the name is illegible. Wedding photos show a very handsome couple splendidly dressed, with a large wedding party.
As newlyweds, Albert and Charlotte lived in the Mother Cabrini apartments in Chicago. Their first house was at 4145 Eddy St. in Chicago, and that is where Charlotte lived with children Elizabeth, Al, and Vern while Albert was away during World War II, where he was stationed in France and North Africa. When he returned, they had Aliceand Chuck.
Albert used to go on long walks, and one day came back and told Charlote that he had bought another house, furniture and all. They lived in that house, 3648 N. Springfield Ave., Chicago, in an area called "The Villa," for many years, until they prepared to move to California to be with children.
Charlotte, Al, and children took summer trips at times. In 1952 they drove fromChicago to the Black Hills, to Bremerton WA to visit Charlotte's brother James(Fud), possibly to visit Al's sister in Chicago, to San Diego, and Texas.
Albert's family couldn't have been more different than Charlotte's, and althoughshe cooked Italian food and must have gotten used to it to some extent, their backgrounds were very different. Their daughter Alice Loverde Savage wrote, "[Albert's father] Santo Loverde and his brother Angelo married two sisters and lived next door to each other. [Albert] was one of 12 children, with 8 cousins growing up next door, and when we were growing up, all of these siblings and cousins were grown and living in Chicago with approximately 8,327 children ... andthen there was Mom's family; she was also one of 12 children, scattered aroundthe country; the only other in Chicago was Aunt Leva."
Grandpa was an enthusiastic piano player and story teller, as well as a doctor loved and respected by his large extended family and their community. He delivered many of the babies in the family.
As he and Charlotte made preparations to move from Chicago, where he had lived all his life, to go to California to be near children, he died of a heart attack in March 1984.
