From: U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946 (Ancestry.com)World War II service of more than four years with the 8th Engineer Sqdn., of the First Cavalry Division. He made several invasions in the South Pacific as a reconnaissance staff sergeant, but was most proud of being part of the famous "Flying Column" of the First Cavalry which drove over 100 miles through enemy lines in 24 hours, down the east flank of the central Luzon plain and entered Manila on Feb. 3, 1945, ahead of General Douglas MacArthur. The First Cavalry liberated 3,000 Santa Tomas internees who had been prisoners since April 1942. Among those freed were Lt. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright, hero of Corregidor, and Mr. Prater's lieutenant who had gone to the Philippines in 1942, only to be captured and spent the entire war in a prison camp. Mr. Prater later served with the Texas National Guards 49th Armored Division, as an officer with the 145th Tank Battalion.
