Individual Details
(Abt 1751 - Nov 1814)
Robert Deakins Hooker and Ruth Prather were probably married in Prince George's County as the 1790 census found them still residing in that county. Living with the couple in 1790 were one White male under 16, one White female and two slaves. Soon, however, the family moved some 25 to 30 miles to the western part of Montgomery County near Poolesville, Maryland. The frontier land of Montgomery County created in 1776 was far cheaper than property to the east of Washington D.C., and much of this land proved excellent for raising tobacco. Robert D. Hooker's move to take advantage of this territory began another round in the family's westward migration. Their new farm was probably within seven or eight miles of Sugar Loaf Mountain, the highest elevation in Montgomery County.
