Herbert Hershal PRATER
(7 Jan 1892 - 6 Jun 1959)
He is presumed to be the son of Wiley Prater. In 1910 (Census), his grandmother Julia Prater was living with him; thus his grandfather was John Wesley Prater (1846-1910). John only had two sons according to the 1880 Census -- Wiley & James. James has a full set of children in 1900, so Hershal wouldn't fit. Wiley disappears from the record, and may have died before 1910 or even 1900. An alternative explanation is that Lou was either married previously and had a husband who died, or she had Herbert illicitly. And perhaps her new husband Pike didn't want to raise a child by another father. Anyway, either case could be an explanation why 8 year old Herbert can to live with his grandmother
