He and his brothers organized one of the last cattle drives from New Mexico to the rail head at El Paso, TX. Samuel represented his two brothers on the trail drive, taking several thousand head of cattle to El Paso along with several thousand head of cattle from other smaller neigboring ranchers. Upon arriving in El Paso he was met by one of his girl students, who had taken the stage line to El Paso and was waiting for Samuel to arrive. Samuel had been having an affair with her and she was going to have his child. He sent word back to his brothers telling them that he was going to Alaska "to strike it rich" in the newly found gold fields. He also said he was going to use all the money from the cattle as his grubstake. He asked that his brothers take care of his ranch, wife, and kids while he was gone and he would pay them back upon his return and plenty more with the gold he was going to find. Well, Samuel ended up in Santa Barbara, CA. He changed his name to Browning (his mothers maiden name) -- Gary Prather
