He was a candidate for Governor of Kansas. Was Warden of State Penitentiary twice. Article from Kansas City Star, June 26, 1939:
HEART ATTACK FATAL - John Kirk Prather, 56, twice warden of the Kansas Pen. at Lansing, died tonight of a heart attack. Prather's mother, Mrs. Milie M. Prather died Thursday and funeral services were held this afternoon. After his retirement as warden early this year, Prather had been a representative of the FHA here. He had long been a leader in Wyandotte Democratic politics. Prather and his wife had just returned from a trip downtown, Prather had taken a bath and told his wife,"I'm going to smoke a cigarette." Immediately after that Mrs. Prather in her bedroom heard him fall. She rushed into the living room and found his sitting in a chair. He died before a physician could arrive. Prather was born on a farm near Columbus, Kansas and came to K.C. with his parents when he was 11 years old.
