Nicholas PRATER
(Bet 1550 and 1560 - Abt 23 Jun 1589)
Nicholas had inherited from his fathers estate the Manor of Hook, Wiltshire (located in the "holdings" of the Viscounts St. John). Nicholas had health problems (mental) he lived and was cared for in the home of Anthony Prater until Anthony's wife died in 1578. Nicholas was then sent to live with his sister in London. Shortly after, Nicholas (or more likely his sisters husband) brought court proceedings, claiming that Nicholas had gained his former health and wanted the return of his estates of Hook which Anthony had seized. In his response Anthony stated: My brother, Nicholas, a lunitic was cared for in his home at his expense for years and continued to be cared for by his sister at his expense and he claimed the Manor of Hook to produce the return for these expenses. The court found in the favor of Anthony. The only other thing mentioned in these court records is: My brother Nicholas and others, seized upon my Manor and stole 18 cows. -- Gary Prather
