On August 07, 1864 he was wounded in action at Morefield, Va., while scouting, John was spotted by the Yankees. He rode in an attempt to escape, but found that he was on a cliff overlooking the South Branch of the Potomac River and surrounded by the enemy on three sides. In order to prevent being captured, he rode the horse over the cliff into the river below. While trying to cross the river to safety he was shot in the back. He was hurt and unconcience, but his horse took him back to his comrades.Census
