James I. "Jim" PRATER ●

(Feb 1832 - )

I believe this James Prater is certainly the grandson of Archleus Prater and Rosanna Lentz. The most likely candidate is Archleus's son Holly. For further explanantion, see below. -- rj

If you look at that 1840 Archelaus Prater census there's a male in the household age 5 - 10 years old and this may be James. In 1830, Archelaus Prater's wife was enumerated as 50-60 years of age so she would have been between 52 - 62 years of age when James was born. James and wife Margaret Elkins Prater, married in Cannon County, Tennessee in February 18, 1850, are enumerated in the Archelaus Prater 1850 Warren County, Tennessee census. purchased 75 acres of land from Henry Lance (who we believe to be Henry Lance brother of James Jasper Lance who had married (1) Basil Pitts Prather's daughter Mary Prather) 27 November 1851. In the deed, James is identified as James "I" Prater. The land description places the parcel of land in Cannon County District 7 on the south and east boundary of James' wife Margaret Elkins Prater's father M. G. Elkins. I had thought at one time that James was a son of Archelaus but don't think so. Maybe a grandson but I have no idea who his father was. If James is a grandson, it appears his father would have been born after 1807 because Archelaus moved into Tennessee after he sold his North Carolina property in February of 1807. Archelaus' first son in Tennessee was Martin L. Prater born 1808. James wasn't Marrtin's son. The next son of Archelaus that I know of was Thomas M. and he was never married. Thomas M. was born 1817 so he would have been only 15 years old when James was born. And, James wasn't listed in that lisf of heirs of Thomas M. when Thomas' estate was settled in 1866. -- Bob Prater

I do not think the father of James I Prater will ever be found, but I do think Archelaus was his grandfather. -- Shawna Davenport, PRATHER-L, 14 Jun 2006
