Individual Details
John A. HOLLAND
(25 Nov 1847 - 20 May 1918)
Charlie Ernest Holland, a long-time resident of Cameron, Texas, and 82 at the time, stated in a letter written in 1989 that his father, Stephen Allen Holland (b. 5-30-1873, TN; d. 1943, Milam Co., TX), told him that he had come to Texas with his "Uncle Steve." He said his "Uncle Steve," who was living in Buckholtz, Texas, at the time had returned to Tennessee for a visit and the he (Stephen Allen Holland) returned to Texas with him and never went back to Tennessee.
This is the basis for the conclusion that John A. Holland and Stephen Aaron Holland were brothers and that they are the same John A. Holland listed in the 1850 census and the John A. and Stephen Holland listed in the 1860 census. The ages, names and places all fit.
It is also fairly good evidence that many of John A. Holland's children remained in Tennessee since Stephen Aaron Holland did not move to Texas until after 1880. It is also probable that the "A" in John A. Holland stands for Allen and that he gave his middle name and his brother's first name to Stephen Allen Holland.

Further evidence that this information is correct lies in the fact that the 1870 census for Cocke Co., TN, lists a John Holland, 22; Hester A., 19, and Juda 4/12. This matches exactly the information provded by Charlie Ernest Holland (See Stephen Aaron Holland) which showed that all of John A. Holland's children were born after 1870,
EXCEPT Juda F.
