John J. PRATER

In the History of The Prater Family, written by Cloyd [Dutch] Prater, he talks about the exploits of John J. and Catlet L. Prater. in a letter Dutch wrote 16 March 1977, he says that John J. and Catlet spent the winter of 1860 at Ft. Riley, Kansas. They spent some time that winter cutting walnut trees and floating logs to Topeka where they sold those logs to the U.S. government for gun stocks. In Dutch's history, he says they were government scouts leading freight trains or caravans to Fort Harker and Fort Wallace and Fort Larned. They also cut hay and killed buffalo for the government.
