MAN, 86 ,KILLED BY FREIGHT TRAIN .Efforts of Watchman and Brother to Warm Him are to No Avail . Falling to hear or see an approaching freight train. George Hammons , age about eighty-six ,1138 Vanderman street was killed Saturday at the intersection of the Belt and Big Four railroad tracks in southeast Indianapolis . The train of the Pennsylvania railroad, was bound for Terre Haute on the Belt tracks. Mr. Hammons was walking along the Big Four right-of-way when he was seen by Michael Weis , 3333 Prospect street ,tower watchman and his brother George Weis ,1235 Vandeman street , both of whom ran out on the platform and shouted for him to stop . Hammons hesitated , they said , and then continued to the crossing .Clarence Slack , engineer of the freight train , and Earl Harmes , fireman also saw the danger and attempted to warn him . However, the train was too close to avoid an accident , and a moment later the elderly man fell beneath the wheels . His skull was fractured and his body was mangled badly .Witnesses said he he appeared preoccupied and did not hear any of the warnings or see the train . Hammons lived with his daughter Mrs. John Connell ,and his son-in-law at the Vandeman street address .The body was identified by George Weis , who was a neighbor . A police squad in charge of Lieutenant Don Tooley investigated and notified the coroner . ”
