At the onset of the Civil War a list was posted at the court house in DeWitt Co. of men who would have to leave the south or be hung because they where against slavery and succession. Andrew Prather's name was at the top of the list. So he and the other men on the list prepared to leave for California by Wagon Train. It was late in 1860. Mary Ella had a brother in law name Henry Patterson (in 1860)he was married to Orpha Prather. The family met the Mckenney family in Uvalde on there way to California.They left Uvalde in the sping of 1861.Emigration
