Springdale news Jan 19 1912 from Dec 29 1911 Huntsville Democrat "Sam Prater who was stabbed several times with a knife at Combs on the 23 in a fight with Charley Van Brunt and Tom Motley died Saturday morning just 2 weeks after the difficulty, his death resulting from hemorrhages from the wounds. Van Brunt and Motley were step brothers and both against Prater. They were rearessted and brought to the Huntsville jail. They were taken back to Combs and their preliminary trial began the following day before Squire Rogers of Union Twp who called Squire Rogers of Lincoln Twp to sit with him on the case. The trial closed yesterday abt noon and the defendants were bound over on the charge of 2nd degree murder to await the action of the grand jury. Sheriff Shuster, accompanied by Deputy V.A. Combs of Combs, arrived here last night with Motley and Van Brunt and placed them in jail, from where it is unknown whether they will be able to secure bail or not. Reports state the evidence against them is strong. Attorneys John s. Combs of this city and Vol Walker of Fayetteville, represented the defendants while Prosecuting Attorney Fuller, assisted by Dep Prosc. Fred Tillman of Fayetteville appeared for the state."
