Matthew HOWARD

(Abt 1609 - Abt 1659)

There is no evidence (as far as I know) proving either this lineage or any other for the immigrant Matthew Howard. The Moss work looked like it might have been on to something, in so far as it theorized a possilbe link between Matthew Howard the Howards of Brockdish Hall (which is the family generations 11 & 12, in the lineage you quoted from, actually belong to, although I believe the wife of Robert Howard was a Buxton not a Burton), but I seem to recall several posts to this list a few years ago that called even that into question. Placing Matthew as a descendant of an otherwise unknown child of Lord Thomas Howard and Lady (not Princess) Margaret Douglas made for a good story (if romance novels are your cup-of-tea), but it had no basis in historical fact...and there are a several of us who subscribe to this list who'd be delighted if it did...although at this point, speaking strictly for myself, I'd just be happy to know anything about Matthew's ancestry. Oh well... -- Jeff Duvall, GEN-MEDIEVAL, 13-Apr-2004
