Brice Holloway ADAIR

(12 Nov 1846 - 7 Jun 1892)

His Epitaph:

BRICE H. ADAIR, NOVEMBER 12, 1846 - JUNE 7, 1892

B.H. Adair lost his life
on the seventh day of June
While standing by his wife
trying to save his son
Mr. Adair lived a christian life
this his neighbors all knew
While his son he was trying to rescue.
He received the fatal blow
Twelve white caps at midnight
Price Chisolm one of the crew
and with a double barrel shotgun
This awful deed did do.

Here's what happened:

The Son (Robert Luther Adair) was about 19 yrs. old, was poplar with the girls, this created jealousy, and a group of 8 young men decided to ruff him up. They put on masks to disguise themselves, and went to the door and demanded entrance, which was refused by the father (Brice H. Adair). They then broke in the door, with weapons in their hands. Brice, seeing that his son might be in danger, tried to stop them, but he was shot by Chism. In the excitement the son (Robert L. Adair) grabbed a gun from the corner of the room and shot Chism. (Who died the following Saturday). 5 of the 8 young men established an alibi, which was never broken, so they were released. The other 2 were tried and sent to prison.
