Williamus PRATER
(Ca 1420 - )
The family may have Britanno-Roman origins. The surname "Prater" is possibly from Latin "praetor" (an official elected by the Romans to serve as a judge), but this is just my guess.
Some genealogists have suggested that they are descended from the Preaux/Rye. It is preposterous to suggest a connection from the English Prater family to a Norman family whose name is only remotely similar, and whose phonetic roots are totally dissimilar. There is a gap of about 400 years from there earliest known Prater -- William (b.c.1455) and the Normans.
