Princess Violante of Hungary

(Abt 1216 - 1251)

Violante was born in Esztergom, Hungary, about 1216, the daughter of Andras II, king of Hungary, and his second wife Yolande de Courtenay. She was a half-sister of Maria of Hungary, empress of Bulgaria, Béla IV, king of Hungary, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary and Kálmán of Hungary, duke of Croatia.

Violante's mother died in 1233, when Violante was seventeen years old. Her father married his third wife Beatrice d'Este, and had a son Stefan.

In Barcelona on 8 September 1235 Violante became the second wife of Jaime I 'the Conqueror', king of Aragón, son of Pedro II of Aragón and Marie of Montpellier. By the marriage, Violante became queen consort of Aragón Jaime already had a son Alfonso by his first marriage to Eleanor of Castile, whom he had divorced. Jaime and Violante had ten children, of whom four would have progeny, including his heir Pedro, the future Pedro III, king of Aragón. Their daughter Isabelle became queen of France by her marriage to Philippe III 'le Hardi', king of France.

Violante died in 1253. Her remains and those of her daughter Sancha lie in the monastery of Santa Maria de Vallbona in Lleida, Catalonia.
