Baron Ferencz Thurzó de Bethlenfalva

(Abt 1534 - 12 Mar 1574)

Ferencz was the son of János Thurzó de Bethlenfalva and Anna Abáffy de Nagyabafálva. Raised as a Catholic, he chose a religious vocation and rose to become bishop of Nyitra. However, after changing religion to become a Protestant he became count of Nyitra and grand treasurer of Hungary. On 21 June 1562 in Burg Monyorokerek, he married Katalin Zrinski, daughter of Nikola IV Zrinski, ban of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, and Katalin Frangepan de Veglia. They had a son and two daughters who would have progeny. Still quite young, he died of snakebite on 12 March 1574. His widow Katalin married Baron Imre Forgách de Ghymes et Gács.
