Prince Rudolf Wenzel Colloredo Waldsee

Rudolf Wenzel Josef was born in Prague on 7 July 1706, the only child of Graf Hieronymus von Colloredo und Wallsee, Vizegraf zu Mels, and Gräfin Johanna Caroline Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau. In 1711 the members of the family were made Counts of the Holy Roman Empire. On 14 July 1727 in Vienna Rudolf Wenzel married Gräfin Maria Gabriele Franzisca von Starhemberg, daughter of Graf Thomas Gundaccer von Starhemberg and his second wife Gräfin Maria Josepha Jörger zu Tollett. They had five children of whom four would have progeny. The remaining child was Hieronymus, who would become prince-archbishop of Salzburg, and the first patron of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 1744 Rudolf Wenzel was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece. In 1745 he became imperial vice-chancellor ('Reichs-Vizekanzler'). Among his responsibilities was authorisation of which books were to be printed in the empire.

In 1763 Rudolf Wenzel and all other members of the Colloredo family were elevated to the rank of Princes of the Holy Roman Empire. He died in Vienna on 1 November 1788.
