Individual Details
Fernando I King of Aragón
(27 Nov 1380 - 22 Apr 1416)
Fernando was born on 27 November 1380, the younger son of Juan I, king of Castile and León, and Eleonore of Aragón. In 1406, upon the death of his elder brother Enrique III 'the Infirm', king of Castile and León, Fernando declined the Castilian crown and instead, with Enrique's widow Catherine of Lancaster, became co-regent during the minority of his nephew Juan II. In this capacity he distinguished himself by his prudent administration of domestic affairs.
In 1393 Fernando married Elionor de Albuquerque, condesa de Albuquerque, daughter of Sancho Alfonso of Castile, conde de Albuquerque, and Brites (Beatriz) of Portugal. They had seven children of whom three sons and two daughters would have progeny.
After Fernando's uncle Martin I 'el Humano', king of Aragón and Sicily, died without surviving issue, Fernando was chosen to succeed him as king by the Pact of Caspe in 1412.
The most notable accomplishment of his brief reign was his agreement in 1416 to depose the antipope Benedict XIII, thereby helping to end the Great Schism, which had divided the Western Church for nearly forty years.
Fernando died on 2 April 1416 in Igualada. He was succeeded as king of Aragón by his eldest son Alfonso V. Alfonso would in turn be followed by his younger brother Juan II.
