Baron Ferenc Batthyány

(1577 - 13 Sep 1629)

Ferenc was born in 1577, the son of Boldizsár Batthyány and Dorottya Zrinski. He was brought up in Güssing, and then joined the service of Emperor Rudolf II. He was a lover of music and poetry, and - like his father - a fervent guardian of the Protestant faith.

On 16 July 1607 he married Eve z Lobkowicz, daughter of Ladislav III 'starsi' z Lobkowicz z Zbirov and Gräfin Maria Magdalena von Salm-Neuburg. They had four children of whom a son and two daughters would have progeny. Through his marriage the family acquired the properties of Neuhaus/Dobra, Szentgothárd, Rakicsán, Bickse (county Féhér), etc.

Ferenc was chamberlain, grand master of the horse and lord lieutenant of the country of Sopron (Ödenburg). In 1603 he was raised to the rank of count for his services. From 1593 he fought against the Turks: at Esztergom (Gran), in 1595 at Székes-Fehérvar (Stuhlweissenburg) and in 1602 at the fortress of Kanizsa, as his father had done 20 years earlier. In 1605 the Turks attacked the Batthyány estates, laid waste to the land and took away some of the population into captivity. In these difficult circumstances Ferenc remained loyal to Emperor Rudolf II, and in 1606 he was given the estate of Körmend.

At the coronation of Ferdinand II, Ferenc carried the sword of St. Stephan. However in 1620 he fought on the side of Gabor Bethlen, prince of Transylvania, against Emperor Ferdinand and Graf Miklos Esterházy de Galántha. Ferenc even called up a Turkish relieving force from Kanicza when he perceived freedom of religion to be under threat. After the Treaty of Nikolsburg (31 December 1621), relations between Ference and the imperial court returned to normal. He died on 13 September 1625 in Schlaining.
